Oakland, Calif. - January 6, 2015 - Fast ForWord Home today announced it has selected seven year-old Nava Nautu, of Los Gatos, California, as the recipient of a four month scholarship to Fast ForWord. Fast ForWord is an online intervention designed by neuroscientists that develops the foundational cognitive and literacy skills to enhance learning, including working memory, attention span, processing speed, grammar, phonological awareness, and other skills necessary to become a better reader. The scholarship is offered through the Fast ForWord Home® service, which combines the Fast ForWord exercises with support from a trained consultant who coaches the family in ways to make maximum progress.
Nava has had difficulty with spelling and reading in school. According to his parents, "Nava struggles with school work because most of it involves some reading. He's very reluctant to do work, particularly the spelling or reading. It is rarely ever a challenge to get him to do any type of work with numbers or art but whenever we have to do spelling or reading, it's a constant battle."
Nava has a twin brother, and a sister. His mother is a special education teacher and his father is a fitness professional specializing in stroke recovery.
Through active participation in the children's afterschool activities, Nava’s father recognized the burden that learning difficulties were placing on his young learners and family. Despite his devotion to providing one-to-one homework sessions in a patient and supportive environment, language processing and memorization tasks often led to frustration and stress. Motivated to explore ways to address the learning challenge, Mr. Nautu read up on how the brain can change. He discovered Fast ForWord, and applied for the scholarship in November.
In December, a trained remote consultant for Fast ForWord Home began assisting Mr. Nautu in coaching his son through a four month series of daily exercises, done from the comfort of home.
