Oakland, Calif. — Sept. 19, 2013 — Can the brain really change its own structure and function? What does this mean for students who struggle with language or reading? On Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. Eastern), Scientific Learning Corp. (OTCQB:SCIL) will present a free, online seminar by Norman Doidge, M.D., author of the New York Times and international bestseller, “The Brain That Changes Itself.” Scientific Learning, maker of the Fast ForWord® and Reading Assistant™ online learning programs, is offering a free download of a chapter from Dr. Doidge’s groundbreaking book to everyone who registers for the webinar.
During the live webinar, titled “The Neuroplasticity Revolution: New Ways to Improve Learning,” Doidge will explore the topic of neuroplasticity, and how the human brain can change its own structure and function with thought, experience and mental exercise. He will discuss experiments that revealed that the brain is “plastic” or changeable, and show how these findings radically change our understanding of learning and student potential, particularly for students with learning challenges or disorders. He will also share online interventions that have grown out of these neuroscience breakthroughs, and how they work to help students improve their skills and overcome reading and language difficulties.
In “The Brain That Changes Itself,” Doidge, a psychiatrist and researcher at Columbia University, set out to investigate neuroplasticity and met the scientists championing it and the people whose lives they have transformed. In Chapter 3, which will be available as a free download on Scientific Learning’s website, he discusses the groundbreaking work of Dr. Michael M. Merzenich, a leading researcher on brain plasticity and one of the founding scientists of Scientific Learning.
The webinar with Doidge and his chapter are free, but registration is required. To register or for more information, visit http://bit.ly/19ffJhg
