Oakland, Calif. — Sept. 23, 2013 — Scientific Learning Corp. (OTCQB:SCIL) today announced that a recent customer survey shows that the vast majority of Fast ForWord® and Reading Assistant™ users are pleased with the results they are getting from the online learning programs. More than 900 customers completed the survey, including teachers, school and district administrators, lab coaches, instructional aids, and IT administrators.
According to the survey, more than 80 percent of Fast ForWord customers say that the online reading intervention is improving students’ cognitive skills and reading skills, and that it is easy to use. More than half of customers are using the program with special education and general education students. Response to Intervention (RtI), English language learner (ELL), and gifted and talented students participate in the program as well. Fast ForWord users state that the program’s greatest benefits are that it targets cognitive skills such as memory, attention, processing and sequencing, and that it targets pre-literacy, language and reading skills.
Similarly, 84 percent of Reading Assistant users see marked improvements in students’ reading fluency, and 74 percent report improved results in reading comprehension. Almost half of respondents use Reading Assistant to serve RtI and general education students. The online tool is also used with special education, ELL, and gifted and talented students.
While educators are pleased with the results in students who use either the Fast ForWord or Reading Assistant program, customers who use both programs report the most satisfaction with student results.
“The survey results show that our customers are highly satisfied with the results they are seeing from Fast ForWord and Reading Assistant, as well as the support they’re receiving from the company,” said Robert C. Bowen, CEO for Scientific Learning. “The results also illustrate that educators understand the importance of cognitive skills and reading fluency in their students’ success. A whopping 97 percent of Fast ForWord users say that improving cognitive skills is important, and 92 percent of Reading Assistant users say reading fluency is important. What’s most interesting is that the schools seeing the most success are those using both Fast ForWord and Reading Assistant, which speaks very highly about the effectiveness of the programs when used together.”
The Fast ForWord program addresses reading skills and concurrently develops foundational cognitive skills like memory, attention, processing, and sequencing. These cognitive skills are central to all learning, resulting in improved outcomes for reading and other subject areas, too. Students using the program can raise their reading skill level up to two years in as little as three months.
Reading Assistant is the only online tool that uses speech recognition to correct and support students as they read aloud, helping them build fluency and comprehension with the help of a supportive listener. No other program or e-book provides comparable real-time guidance and feedback. With Reading Assistant, students can improve their reading grade level up to 50 percent more than students receiving classroom instruction alone.
