Oakland, Calif. — March 12, 2012 — “Inside Jersey” magazine has named Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL) co-founder Dr. Paula Tallal one of the Garden State’s 20 “biggest brains.” A cognitive neuroscientist and board-certified clinical psychologist, Tallal was awarded the designation for her part in creating the company’s Fast ForWord® family of educational software products, which the magazine lauded for the capacity to “help improve reading skills for the learning disabled by as much as two grade levels and in as little as six to 12 weeks.”
“Inside Jersey” regularly highlights innovations and achievements by New Jersey residents, and lists the state’s best resources and professionals within specific categories. For the “biggest brain” list, also dubbed the “N.J. Brainpower List,” the criteria were creativity and the achievement of significant innovations in their fields. Tallal shares list membership with, among others, a physician who invented a new DNA test for tuberculosis, a chemical engineer who pioneered a lab technique that could hasten the engineering of replacement organs for transplant patients, and the winner of the 2002 Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics.
The development of the Fast ForWord program is based on neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself in response to new experiences, as well as the science of how the brain learns and retains information. The software utilizes these neuroscience principles to exercise and develop the brain’s processing efficiency, which is essential for academic learning and reading success.
Tallal is the founder and co-director of the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience at the Rutgers-Newark campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, one of the nation’s most distinguished public research universities. She also is a co-director of the Temporal Dynamics of Learning Center (TDLC), one of six National Science Foundation Science of Learning Centers. Tallal was selected by the Library of Congress to be the Commentator for the Field of Psychology at its Bicentennial Celebration and earned the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Prize for her work leading to the development of the Fast ForWord software.
